In 2000, Grand Junction (Mesa County) was included in the Census Bureau's ranking of Metropolitan areas. Now that Grand Junction is recognized as a metropolitan area, it will be easier to find statistics on the area.
The US Census shows that between 1990 and 2000, the metropolitan area's population grew by 23,110 from 93,145 to 116,255 people.
The estimated 2001 population for Grand Junction was 118,556. The estimated 2002 population was 121,419. The area is definitely booming.
The US Census reports that Mesa County boasts 48,427 housing units and covers 3,341.11 square miles (13.36 square miles of water). This gives Grand Junction an average of 2.4 people per housing unit and a comfortable population density of 34.9 people per square mile.
