Foot Locker

Foot Locker is a leading Mall based retailer of sport shoes and athletic gear. The company operates over three thousand stores worldwide. Brands include Foot Locker, Lady Foot Locker, Kids Foot Locker, Champs Sports, and Foot Action. In the online arena, Foot Locker operates the Eastbay Catalog.

Foot Locker trades on the NYSE with the symbol FL. The site FootLocker-inc.com provides corporate information and investor relations.

The lineage of the store began with Kinney Shoes which was founded by George Romanta Kinney in 1894 (ref).

In 1956, Kinney Shoes was the eighth largest shoe retailer. Kinney attempted to merge with Brown Shoe Company which was the third largest shoe retailer. This merger was eventually blocked by the U.S. District Court in St. Louis for monopoly concerns.

In 1963, Kinney merged with Woolworth. Woolworth was a discount store established in 1878. As a subsidiary of Woolworth, Kinny sought to create specialty stores for specific markets. In 1967, the firm created Stylco, in 1968 the firm created Susie Casuals and in 1974 Foot Locker.

Woolworth changed its name to the Venator Group in 1997 then to Foot Locker in 2001 to focus exclusively on sporting goods. The Woolworths article shows the full corporate timeline.
