Adventist Movement

The Adventist Movement began as part of the Biblical Restoration Movement that took place in the early 1800s. The movement has spit into several branches with the Seventh Day Adventist church being the largest.

I placed links to primary sites in the movement in the Adventist Directory and present a brief history of the movement below.

The Millerite Movement

Adventism refers to a religious movement that was heavily influenced by William Miller (1782 – 1849) who was part of the broader biblical restoration movement that took part in the early years of the United States.

Miller's interpretation of the Book of Daniel concluded that the second coming would occur on October 22, 1844. The event did not take place. Followers called the non-event "The Great Disappointment" but mustered on.

The second great luminary of the movement was Ellen G. White (1827 – 1915). Ms. White was a prolific writer who claims to have been inspired by multiple visions. Some articles indicate that Adventists consider Ellen White to be a prophetess.

The Seventh Day Adventist Church was organized on May 21, 1863. This became the primary branch of the movement. Some of the branches of the movement split from the SDA. The branches often differ on their feelings about Ellen White.

I pulled the first video from DareToBelieve.com which is an online ministry. The second video is a public interview with former members the church.

There are several videos on Youtube that discuss whether or not the movement is a cult. It seems to me that that organization is quite diverse. Some of the branches show cult-like behavior. This video is critical but less judgmental.

Branches of the Movement

Wikipedia listed several churches that trace to the Millerite Movement. These include:

Web Sites

The Seventh Day Adventist Church has grown to over 86,000 churches and operates over 7,500 schools and a hundred hospitals. The SDA movement claims to have over 20 million members.1.

The main web site for the organization in adventist.org. The site AdventistEducation.org has information on the school system. The site AdventistDirectory.org lists churches of the SDA.
