Enterprise Rent-A-Car

Enterprise Rent-A-Car has grown to become the world's largest car rental agency.

The company was founded in 1957 by Jack C. Taylor of Clayton Missouri as the Executive Leasing Company. He renamed the company after the USS Enterprise in 1969 and began expanding outside the St Louis area.

The company focused primarily on the local rental market where Enterprise provides extra transportation for short trips and rentals when driver's primary car is in the shop.

In 2007, Enterprise purchased Vanguard Automotive Group which owned Alamo and National Car Rental. Today the company has 5,400 “home city” locations, and 419 airport locations.

In 2008, Enterprise create a program called Enterprise Car Share. Originally targeted at universities. Car share develops car rentals as a viable alternative to car ownership. Unfortunately, car share is available in only a few big cities.
